Hounslow Council and Highways are clamping down on litter bugs. In November last year, they announced the police would be on patrol issuing on-spot fines of up to £80 to anyone caught dropping litter. Since then they’ve handed out 17, with 7 offenders having to pay the maximum fine amount.
Campaigning for a cleaner London, the borough commented that with over 800 public rubbish bins, there’s simply no excuse. They’ve also set up a hotline – Grimebusters can be used by members of the public who wish to report littering, fly-tipping, and graffiti issues.
Following a £300,000 extra investment in street cleaning, the council made significant improvements, reducing litter by 24%.
